the πόρνην is the whore and γυνὴ the woman. Ὧδε ὁ νοῦς ὁ ἔχων σοφίαν. Αἱ ἑπτὰ κεφαλαὶ ἑπτὰ ὄρη εἰσίν, ὅπου ἡ γυνὴ κάθηται ἐπ’ αὐτῶν. The subtle distinction between the whore and the woman hints at two different but not mutually exclusive entities, so double could simply the punishment due for both crimes perpetrated by the single perpetrator playing two roles, as well furthering the imagery that there are two forms or manifestations of the whore/woman (Jerusalem/ Rome). Paul, in 1 Cor 1:16 speaks of the individual's involvement with a whore as that of becoming one flesh (when joined to a woman) but he precedes it with an odd reference to joining members (pl) to a whore (sing); also, the imagery of being drunk on wine of fornications shares the natural (scientific) influence which gives rise to bread (the yeast that leavens bread is the same as that which ferments alcohol). Two distinct processes (crime sprees), one culprit.
