"appointed" presumes the divine passive which is not supported by the context. This verse stands in contrast with the Jews who decided for themselves that they were unworthy of eternal life by rejecting Paul's preaching. It should therefore at the least be rendered with a middle voice like the Rotherham version has: "disposed." I think "chose" as in "as many as believed chose eternal life" conveys accurately what the text is saying.
